Keynote speech by Sylvie Reihnard (producer, Lift Conference, projectlead Development Fund Migros Engagement, co-founder Swiss Digital Alliance)
Things are changing, even in immutable Switzerland. New digital projects from Swiss digital creators are widely echoed all around the world and the Swiss government is on the verge to adopt a more innovation-oriented cultural policy. Will the swiss funding system for audio-visual production finally be adapted to the realities of the digital age? How might digital creation be stimulated in Switzerland? Sylvie Reihnard will give us a fresh perspective on the main challenges that are facing the Swiss creative industry.

Les cinq projets présentés

Sequenced (spatial story for mobile and VR, apelab)
Emilie Tappolet (Creative Director, apelab)
Sylvain Joly (Art Director, apelab)

The project
Sequenced is the first animated series on 360° for mobile devices and virtual reality helmets. According to the user’s focus on certain angles or characters, the story may seamlessly take a different path, in reference to the “choose your own adventure” books. The series pilot will come out in 2015 and will be available on Oculus Rift and mobile devices. Currently in development, a prototype of the project has won the Best in Play award at the Game Developers conference in 2014, the Imaginove Grand Prize in Lyon, France, and is nominated in two categories for the Games Connection awards this year. It was featured in the New York Times and Wired US as an innovative storytelling medium.
The technology
Gaze is a creative tool for interactive experiences focusing on Virtual Reality and mobile devices. Gaze allows the development of complex non-linear triggered based narratives using only the focus as a controller.

*****

Ma vie de Courgette (animated film and transmedia project, Rita Productions/apelab)
Max Karli (producer, Rita Productions)
Michael Martin (technical director, apelab)

The project
Based on the most anticipated stop motion film Ma Vie de Courgette by Claude Barras, apelab is working on a transmedia mobile application transposing the storyworld of Courgette in a playful experience. Made in traditional stop motion, the puppets start to play a game of wits and taunts as they come alive inside your smartphone when the animators leave the set.
The technology
The game is all made out of traditional stop motion.

Late Shift (interactive film for mobile and theaters, CtrlMovie)
Baptiste Planche (CEO & Co-Founder of CtrlMovie)

The project
Late Shift is the first feature length production in the novel interactive movie format CtrlMovie. It is a Swiss-UK co-production, to be released by the end of 2015. Late Shift will be downloadable for mobile devices in app stores and will also be screened interactively in cinemas. CtrlMovie is a novel interactive movie format. It gives filmmakers the tools to tell multi-optional stories in a truly cinematic way. The audience gets to make decisions on behalf of the main character and is thrilled to see the consequences of their choices unfold on screen seamlessly without a noticeable gap or edit. The film never stops. No decision is still an action. The viewers are under the same time pressure as the protagonist, together as a group of people in theatres, or individually on an iPad.
The technology
CtrlMovie can be featured on various platforms. Originally conceived for handheld, touch-enabled devices it comes to the audience as a stand-alone mobile app. CtrlMovie also offers a participative event-cinema
experience. The audience’s mobile devices, a mobile website and high-speed wifi enable majority votes. Additionally, development work is underway to make CtrlMovie run both for IPTV (set top boxes for digital TV) and for HTML5 for web-based play. And of course there remains the possibility to create conventional linear versions of CtrlMovie by simply sticking to one of the many possible storylines. Thus all conventional distribution channels, be it cinema, TV, VoD or DVD remain open.

MindLeap (brain-powered VR game with integrated motion capture, MindMaze)
Tej Tadi (Founder and CEO, MindMaze)
Aurelien da Campo (Game Developer, MindMaze)
Sofia de Pahlen (Creative Director, MindMaze)

The project
MindMaze has unveiled the world’s first thought-powered virtual reality (VR), augmented reality and motion capture game system for the entertainment and gaming industry. The system is based on MindMaze’s proprietary, medically-proven neurotechnology engine. Combining neural sensing with embedded motion capture cameras, MindLeap unleashes the power of users minds to enhance gameplay and experiences in both virtual and augmented reality. Users can sense and feel in virtual reality for the very first time, unleashing the power of their mind and body to control their experiences.
The technology
The MindMaze platform brings two technologies to enable novel cinematic and gaming experiences. MindMotion is a hybrid 3d camera with depth and stereo sensors for simultaneous multi-user, high-resolution full body tracking. Combining our embedded processing system with advanced face and body tracking algorithms we enable instant avatar animation and gameplay while you move your body freely as in the real world. MindLeap is a lightweight, modular 3D goggle where the user can immerse themselves in virtual and augmented reality worlds with neural sensing and embedded motion capture to enable tailor made experiences.

Plug & Play (short movie and app)
Michael Frei (filmmaker)
Mario von Rickenbach (game designer)

The project
Plug & Play is an award-winning short film and game for your digital device. Explore the feelings of anthropoid creatures that go beyond sexuality and reproduction: love. Plug & Play is a surreal play with plugs. Plug & Play, nominated for the IGF Game Award 2015, has been released on February 2nd, 2015 for iPad and iPhone. The interactive short is based on the identical titled film by Swiss animator Michael Frei and was turned into a surreal short game by independent Swiss developer Mario von Rickenbach.
The technology
« I drew the film just using the integrated touchpad of my laptop using my index finger. Interestingly the word "digital" originates from the word "digitus", Latin for finger, and relates to the fact it was mainly fingers being used to count numbers before the invention of computers. It just made sense to draw a digital film describing a binary world by using my finger to turn pixels on or off. » Michael Frei
« The difficult part was to translate a linear frame-by-frame animation running at 12 frames per second into an interactive animation. We spent a lot of time prototyping to find the right balance between human and computer drawn animation » Mario von Rickenbach.
Game available on iOS, Android and Steam platforms.
